Colour course in English

No prior knowledge required

Everyone is welcome. No prior knowledge is required. During the course we use colour samples in paper format – you do not need to paint or draw.


Focus

The course aims to facilitate your discovery, examination and exploration of colour combinations that resonate with you.


Approach

The course is geared towards practical exercises, mainly based on a methodology where colour samples in paper format are combined. The methodology is developed by the artist, art theorist and teacher Josef Albers. The practical exercises are complemented by briefings and overviews.


Course content

  • How do colours relate to each other?
    The colour circle and the colour triangle – tools to describe colours and their relations
  • How can colours change in character?
    A colour can look different depending on in which context of other colours it is placed
  • What do we associate with different colours?
    Cultural associations between colours and feelings; Colour and pigment in art history
  • What do you experience as a harmonic colour combination?
    Harmony linked to colour compositions and balance of colour tones and quantities
  • How do you want to develop your own colour composition?
    Creative final project of the course


Course material

The course includes access and use of colour samples in paper format with over 300 colours, that can be cut from to create your own colour combinations.. You need to bring some other, basic course material (estimated cost: c:a 200 kr SEK). During the first class you will get to know what material you need to bring (e.g. scalpel/scissors, glue stick and cutting mat).


Instructor

The course is facilitated by Thomas Höjemo, who has a master as well as a doctoral degree in architecture. Thomas has practical pedagogical experience from being a teacher at amongst others Uppsala University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology as well as from courses held independently. He also has theoretical knowledge of pedagogy through courses in pedagogy and higher education pedagogy.
